Vehicle Rapid Deceleration Warning Device

Project Number:
CAR-01-06

This patented technology effectively warns other drivers when a vehicle they are following is rapidly decelerating. Through a sensor mechanism, this technology alerts following drivers to a rapidly decelerating vehicle by deploying an immediately identifiable increase in illumination in the decelerating automobile's center high-mounted stop lamps (CHMSLs).

The device includes sensors that are responsive to acceleration in the primary direction of vehicle motion. The controller communicates with the sensors, corrects for gravitational effects and initiates a warning indicator when the sensed acceleration exceeds a threshold value thereby indicating an urgent deceleration condition. Once the threshold has been confirmed through this system, it is communicated to following drivers by increasing the intensity of the center high-mounted stop lamps (CHMSLs). Under normal breaking, the brake lamps illuminate in a standard manner. When the vehicle achieves a defined threshold of deceleration, the CHMSL's illumination increases in an instantaneous, step-up manner, warning the following driver.

Advantages of this technology are that it uses standard factory wiring with no additional vehicle modification; is automatically activated, does not require any manual intervention and deploys immediately when a vehicle reaches a defined threshold of deceleration.
