LTP Autoimmune Therapeutic

Project Number:
MCGRI-06-06

Autoimmune disorders affect more than 8.5 million people in the United States and include Hashimoto's thyroiditis, pernicious anemia, Addison's disease, type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, Sjögren's syndrome, lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Reiter's syndrome, Grave's disease, scleroderma, psoriasis, xerostomia, and xeropthalmia. Existing treatments of autoimmune diseases have focused on the immune system, but not the autoantigens [antigen(s) produced by an organism and recognized by the organism's immune system] that could trigger or sustain a positive feedback loop of inflammation and apoptosis accompanying the disease.

This patent pending invention describes green tea polyphenol compositions and methods of their use as a therapeutic for decreasing autoantigen expression in a host or cell. In particular, it has been discovered that (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate [EGCG] modulates expression of autoantigens. Downregulation of autoantigens using the disclosed compositions can be used to treat autoimmune diseases or symptoms associated with autoimmune diseases.
