Preparation of Ordered Multi-Layer Films

Project Number:
LU-94-004

This patented technology encompasses a fast, two-step adsorption process for producing ordered organic/inorganic multi-layer structures on metallic and non-metallic substrates by alternate adsorption of a cationic polyelectrolyte and anionic sheets of silicate clay. The multilayer elements have thicknesses greater than about 2200 angstroms on silicon, and greater than about 1500 Angstroms on gold, silver and copper.

Numerous applications for this technique include: protective coatings in the packaging of foods, electronics manufacturing to separate films of metal and/or semiconductors in electronic devices, optical storage media, and membranes for construction of fuel cells, solar cells and solid state batteries.
