Radiation Curable Coatings

Project Number:
LEH-0061-00

This technology is directed to novel radiation curable coating formulations for a variety of surfaces, such as metal, wood or plastic, and for overprint coatings. These novel formulations comprise cheaper and environmentally friendlier oligomers, where a portion of the acrylate oligomers are replaced by a polyester which is preferably derived from a plant oil.

These formulations are UV/EB curable with film properties comparable to conventional formulations; for example, cure rates and surface hardness are usually equivalent and sometimes superior to conventional films. Moreover, they provide improved pigment dispersion during manufacturing, due to an increased rate of pigment wetting and dispersion. Finally, they are less odorous and are believed to be less deleterious to both human health and the environment.

These coating formulations are applicable to overprint varnishes (OPV), lithographic inks and metal coatings (both clear and pigmented). Moreover, they can be used in screen inks, flexographic inks, wood (such as furniture and flooring) and plastic coatings, and protective coatings, as well as in systems requiring enhanced pigment wetting.
